JLPT N4 Travel Vocabulary (Part 1)
Memorizing vocabulary alone isn't enough to become fluent in Japanese.
A much better approach is learning words together with grammar and real-life situations. That's exactly what we'll do in this series.
Every vocabulary comes with natural Japanese examples, English translations, and the grammar points used in each sentence.
Let's begin.
1. 旅行（りょこう）— Travel / Trip
This word means travel, trip, or journey.
You'll often hear it when talking about vacations or business trips.
Example 1
来月、友達と北海道へ旅行する予定ですので、今ホテルを探しています。
Romaji
Raigetsu, tomodachi to Hokkaidō e ryokō suru yotei desu node, ima hoteru o sagashite imasu.
Meaning
Next month, I'm planning to travel to Hokkaido with my friends, so I'm looking for a hotel now.
Grammar
- ～予定です (plan to...)
- ～ので (because)
- ～ています (ongoing action)
Example 2
日本へ旅行したら、富士山を見たり、おいしい寿司を食べたりしたいです。
Romaji
Nihon e ryokō shitara, Fujisan o mitari, oishii sushi o tabetari shitai desu.
Meaning
When I travel to Japan, I'd like to do things like see Mt. Fuji and eat delicious sushi.

- ～たら
- ～たり～たりする
- ～たい
2. 切符（きっぷ）— Ticket
A ticket for trains, buses, or other public transportation.
Example 1
駅に着いたら、新幹線の切符を買うつもりです。
えきについたから、しんかんせんのきっぷをかうつもりです
Meaning
When I arrive at the station, I'm going to buy a Shinkansen ticket.
Grammar
- ～たら
- ～つもりです
Example 2
切符をなくしてしまったので、駅員さんに聞かなければなりません。
きっぷをなくしてしまったので、駅いんにか可なければなりません。
Meaning
I lost my ticket, so I have to ask the station staff.
Grammar
- ～てしまう
- ～ので
- ～なければなりません
3. 駅（えき）— Station
One of the first words you'll use while traveling in Japan.
Example 1
ホテルは駅から歩いて五分ぐらいなので、とても便利です。
ホテルはえきからあるいてごふんぐらいなので、とてもべんりです
Meaning
The hotel is about five minutes on foot from the station, so it's very convenient.
Grammar
- ～から
- ～ぐらい
- ～ので
Example 2
駅に着く前に、お弁当を買っておきましょう。
えきにつくまえに、おべんとうをかっておきましょう・
Meaning
Let's buy a lunch box before arriving at the station.
Grammar
- ～前に
- ～ておく
- ～ましょう
4. 空港（くうこう）— Airport
Used when talking about flights and international travel.
Example 1
飛行機が朝早いので、空港の近くに泊まることにしました。
ひこうきがあさはやいので、くうこうのちかくにとまることにしました。
Meaning
Since my flight is early in the morning, I've decided to stay near the airport.
Grammar
- ～ことにする
- ～ので
Example 2
空港へ行く途中で、お土産を買おうと思っています。
くうこうえいくとちゅうで、おみやげをかうとおもっていまう。
Meaning
I'm thinking about buying souvenirs on the way to the airport.
Grammar
- ～途中で (on the way~
- ～ようと思う (i think ~)
5. 地図（ちず）— Map
Even with smartphones, this word is still commonly used.
Example 1
地図を見ても、この町は少し分かり難いですね。
ちずをみても、このまちはすこしわかりにくいですね
Meaning
Even after looking at the map, this town is still a little confusing.
Grammar
- ～ても (even after ~)
- ～ですね
Example 2
スマホで地図を見ながら、目的地まで歩きました。
スマホでちずをみながら、もくてきちまであるきました。
Meaning
I walked to my destination while looking at the map on my phone.
Grammar
- ～ながら (doing something while doing ~)
- ～まで

Final Thoughts
Instead of memorizing isolated words, try reading each sentence several times until it feels natural.
Once you're comfortable with the grammar, create your own example by replacing the nouns with something related to your daily life.
That's one of the fastest ways to build both vocabulary and sentence patterns at the same time.
